The Alchemist’s Workshop
Instructor: Jim Dailing
October 13 – 14, Thursday and Friday, 10:00am – 5:00pm
Class Fee: $390 | Materials list, $30 Materials Kit Fee Payable to Instructor

Prerequisites: Intermediate class, Basic metal working skills required

Class format: In studio at Danaca Design

This incredibly valuable workshop focuses on the marvels and splendor of gold, a material long treasured among jewelers and patrons alike. Starting with pure, 24k gold students will learn to alloy multiple karats and colors of gold including yellow, green and red, melt and pour ingots and then mill their newly alloyed gold to create sheet, bezel material and wire. Additionally you will learn how to fuse and solder each type of gold created in class to make a beautiful collection of stacking rings. Having the gold you want when you need it will free you from the constraints of what you have on hand which, and in the end, it will save you money. This class will also give you the confidence to allow gold to become a regular part of your jewelry repertoire! This is an intermediate to advance level workshop. Students must have basic metal working skills to attend.

Students MUST Bring:

  • A European compressed charcoal block (available in the studio store)
  • Jeweler’s saw blades (available in the studio store)
  • Students must bring as much pure gold (24kt) as they can afford and want to bring, a full ounce is recommended but ½ ounce will work. The more gold you have, the more alloying options and fabricating you'll be able to complete in class. Jim suggests purchasing the Canadian Maple Leaf, American Buffalo, or pure gold casting grain. Here is the link for Rio Grande’s website for the casting grain: https://www.riogrande.com/product/24k-yellow-gold-casting-grain/608700

Students MAY Bring:

  • Basic fabrication hand-tools including jeweler’s saw, files, sanding sticks/pads/paper
  • Optics for close up work is suggested

Material KITS Include: ($30 Payable to Instructor at time of class)

Fine silver and copper needed for alloying as well as gold solders.
*Materials kit purchase is required. The kit insures all students have the same materials required to learn the techniques and allows everyone to focus on the techniques rather than the materials.

MFA: Tyler School of Art – 1990

Taught at the University of Oregon, Oregon College of Art and Crafts, University of Portland, Central Oregon Community College as well as classes and workshops at schools and craft centers around the country.

I’ve been designing and creating mostly one-of-a-kind engagement and wedding rings for clients from around the world for nearly 40 years. I specialize in creating rings because I love hands and how each hand is unique and because of all that hands can do, express and create. I choose to create mostly engagement and wedding rings because of their importance to my clients and I’m drawn to the fact that my rings will be around long after I am gone.

Currently, I am teaching virtually and in person workshops in stone setting, gold alloying and fabrication and wax carving.
