Artist Statement: When the call went out, I immediately knew what piece I wanted to make and the non-profit I wanted to support. After my first Women’s March attendance I made this “crown” for the 2018 Tiara Challenge. I thought it was perfect and I would remake it for the STATE |meant 2020 Challenge.

Halfway through making this piece, I learned of RGB’s death. I almost changed my idea to do a lace collar inspired necklace instead. Then I thought about her 1993 quote during her Senate confirmation:

"The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a woman's life, to her well-being and dignity. It is a decision she must make for herself. When the government controls that decision for her, she is being treated as less than a full adult human responsible for her own choices."

This brass headband’s message is even more important today.

As a fashion designer in the outdoor industry, I love what the Patagonia Regenerative Organic Stand-Up Shorts’ label reads:

“Vote the a**holes out”
