Artist Statement: Forest fires ravaged the western US in Sept 2020. The air quality was “hazardous”. We stayed inside as much as possible but the physical and emotional effects were clear. Waking up to a red sun makes the heart sink. I live near the water in Settle. Each night at dusk a stream of seagulls fly west for the night, the “seagull highway”. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, even during those dark days. Seeing this got me thinking about all the animals doing their best to survive under increasingly challenging circumstances, many brought on by climate change. Climate change is a devastating fact. The difference between the birds and us is we can do something about it.
