I normally work with porcelain to create small-scale, slab built, functional objects for eating, drinking and serving. A few years ago, I started playing with the offcuts and leftover 'scraps' of clay which turned into little components that I could turn into wearable art.
This ring is part of a series of porcelain jewellery that I have been working on recently, that is inspired by my discoveries while scuba diving. I have met the most beautiful sea creatures and seen amazing coral formations on my underwater explorations. Eusmilia Fastigiata is another name for a family of smooth flower coral, with round, tubular projections. It is normally a creamy color, but in the right light, its tips can appear shine golden in the mottled sunlight.
Leilani was born and raised on the beautiful island of Oahu, in Hawaii. She earned her BFA, in Detroit MI, at the Center for Creative Studies/College of Art and Design in 1992. After travelling much of the world, and earning her teaching degree in England, she has been living and working in Singapore for the past 19 years. Leilani makes slab built, porcelain objects in a small studio in her home and is also a teacher at the British International School.
